New School Board Members:

Welcome to the Association of Alaska School Boards

This is the first edition of the AASB digital resource, Making the Most of Your First Year: What New School Board Members Want to Know, filled with the answers to questions first year Board members consistently ask.

At the Association of Alaska School Boards (AASB), we realize that people most often come to a position on the School Board as concerned citizens who want to make a difference. We also know that there is very little in anyone’s previous experiences that fully prepare them for serving as a public official and a constructive member of a governing Board.

Our goal with this series is to welcome you to the world of public service and get you started on the road to effective governance. The full content of each portion of this resource will be kept here on the AASB website for you to review during the course of the year.

All new Board members will receive an email from AASB every few weeks until the end of the school year announcing when new information is available. We will also send a copy to your superintendent and the administrative assistant at the school district office.  If you have questions please reply to the email and we will try to get you an answer.  Topics over the next few months will include, Board Standards, the Superintendent, Working with Your Board, Meetings, Communication, School Finance and Laws, and Community Engagement. Click here for current topic.

We hope you enjoy your first year on the Board.

Sincerely,

Joseph Reeves,
Associate Executive Director
