Carl Rose |
Executive Director |
Carl Rose has devoted most of his adult life to improving public schools and advocating for the youth of Alaska. Since being elected to the Skagway School Board as a young businessman in 1974, rising to president of the AASB in 1983, and serving in his current position since 1987, Rose has participated in every major education innovation in Alaska. Today, AASB is one of the most prominent organizations in Alaska public education, representing 53 local school districts and working with many partner organizations to promote the education, health, welfare and safety of children and youth. Under his leadership, AASB has matured from a small non-profit with limited responsibilities into statewide organization that advocates for Alaska’s children.

Joseph Reeves |
Associate Executive Director |
Joseph Reeves has worked with school boards since 1986. He was the Director of Board Development and Superintendent Search Services for the New York State School Boards Association before joining AASB in 1998. Joseph’s responsibilities include developing conferences and workshops aligned to Board Standards, facilitating in-district workshops and conducting superintendent searches. He worked as a principal teacher in the Aleutian Region School District in the 1970’s, an assistant inspector of schools in Sierra Leone as a Peace Corps Volunteer and the Education Director of a Research Museum in New York before finding school boards. Joseph has a M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction and a Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Administration.

Timi Tullis |

As a former university adjunct professor and as Director of Residence Life, Timi lived and worked in university residence halls for 14 years, giving her the opportunity to motivate student success daily. She led the Alaska ICE Resiliency in Residence Life Project for the past six years, helping to incorporate the assets framework into Alaska's boarding high schools and university residence halls. Timi’s was the Program Manager for Alaska ICE project and worked with partner organizations across the state. She presented at the NSBA President’s Retreat in the summer of 2007 sharing the Community Engagement work that Alaska ICE had focused on for the last six years as well as a workshop on youth engagement and how to effectively involve youth board decisions. Timi’s responsibilities include planning conferences and workshops aligned to Board Standards, facilitating in-district workshops, as well as the development of on line workshops for board members. Timi has an MA in Education from Michigan State University.

Bruce Johnson |

Bruce Johnson has spent the past 23 years in Alaska serving in a variety of leadership roles, including superintendencies in Juneau, Kodiak Island, and Mt. Edgecumbe High School. Before joining the Association of Alaska School Boards in 2001 as Director of Quality Schools/Quality Students, Bruce served as Alaska’s deputy commissioner of education. In the spring, 2006 he assumed the additional responsibility of directing the AASB-Consortium for Digital Learning. His work with AASB finds him traveling extensively throughout Alaska in an effort to promote “locally owned” school and district improvement for the benefit of student learning.

John Greely |

John Greely is an experienced journalist and writer whose duties include planning the content for all major AASB publications and website, supporting staff involved in legislative activities, developing position papers, special publications and generating research for members and staff. He also conducts salary and issue surveys, tracks labor relations information and conducts communications workshops for member districts.

Diana Miller |
Business Manager |
Diana Miller has over 25 years of accounting experience, including 20 at AASB. She is responsible for preparation of the AASB budget and annual audits. She also supervises the accounting staff and all aspects of the business office. Other duties include meeting coordinator and negotiating with hotels for all AASB meetings and conferences.

Laurie Miller |

Laurie schedules appointments and coordinates travel for the Executive Director. She coordinates and provides general support to the superintendent search facilitator, including communications with applicants, maintenance of confidential applicant files, coordinating logistics with client districts and search finalists. She also assists with Policy Development Services by processing rough drafts to final copy and coordinating the completion of policy manual contract work with district personnel. She assists the AASB Board of Directors with travel at the state and national level.

Stacey Poulson |

Marketing Specialist

Stacey Poulson has over 15 years of design experience in print and web. She is responsible for the design and layout of marketing materials, brochures, newsletters, letterhead, logos, bookstore and conference materials. Stacey also coordinates all of the annual conference sponsors and exhibitors and maintains the AASB website. Her volunteer activities include being a SEADOGS SAR, the service unit secretary and troop co-leader for Juneau girls scouts.

Jessie Miller provides logistical coordination and general support to AASB and Alaska ICE and offers a warm, enthusiastic approach to managing the daily responsibilities of the office. Jessie coordinates registration for all AASB meetings and conferences. A welcome addition to our team in January 2007, Jessie has a natural ability to multi-task and to keep the office staff organized and effective

Sally Rue brings 30 years of professional experience in the fields of community planning and public participation and 20 years of personal involvement in Alaska education: as an active parent volunteer, former Juneau School Board member and member of the Alaska Board of Education and Early Development. Alaska ICEs community engagement work puts her professional and personal experience and skills to work in support of Alaska's kids.

Shelly Eidsness |
Community Engagement Educator |
Shelly Eidsness is fully immersed in the concepts of community engagement, the assets framework, and local decision-making. Her previous professional experience includes work in the public school system and in a boarding school for “at risk” youth. Shelly has served on several community boards and commissions whose objectives were to support and enhance the quality of life for youth. Shelly continues her work in youth development by utilizing her talents to facilitate workshops on community engagement, asset building, and youth leadership, and previously served as Director of Alaska Faith Communities Concerned for Children.

Suzie Gaffney |

Suzie Gaffney has taught school for over thirty years in Texas, Oregon, Alaska, Italy, and Japan. Her experience includes teaching all grade levels, interaction with students in a variety of after-school programs, participating in overseas exchanges, and designing curriculum. Suzie travels throughout Alaska working with youth and adults on community engagement and asset building for Alaskans.

Steve Nelson |
Public Information Coordinator |
Steve Nelson's background in broadcasting, production, advertising, marketing, public relations and politics gives him a first-hand perspective of Alaska's unique media landscape. Steve has provided professional services to private industry, non-profit organizations, television and radio broadcasters, advertising agencies, the Alaska State Legislature and three Alaska governors, most recently serving eight years as Communications Specialist to the Knowles-Ulmer administration.

Larry West |
QS2 District Coordinator |
Larry West provides logistical coordination for Alaska ICE’s targeted community engagement efforts in QS2 and other school districts throughout the state. He coordinates community engagement activities internally with the Directors of QS2 and Alaska ICE, and maintains frequent and proactive communications with Community Engagement Specialists, superintendents and other district staff, and board presidents in each QS2 district. He works very closely with the ICE Community Engagement Educators who work directly in and with the districts. He also collects data and materials that reflect community engagement activities wherever they occur, coordinates survey and evaluation activities, and reports results and progress both internally and to the districts.

Bridget Smith |

Bridget Smith has more than a decade of experience working with families as an adult educator with the Southeast Regional Resource Center, and many years of Alaskan experience, from teaching in McGrath to serving as Adjunct Professor at UAS. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in education from the University of Alaska and a Master’s Degree in psychology from Catholic University of America, has taught English in China, and has written a number of books, articles, and essays.

Kate Dugan is a recent graduate of the Harvard Divinity School, and looks forward to using her interest and experience in community engagement, diverse faith communities, and youth leadership in Alaska. She has worked at other non-profit organizations in Oregon, Washington, Minnesota, Massachusetts, and South Africa.

Hank Overturf, has been an educator in both rural and urban Alaskan communities for 25 years with eleven of those years as a high school administrator. His emphasis is community engagement, and particularly working with school boards and youth engagement.

Andre Layral |
Community Engagement Educator |
André Layral is a former teacher, middle school principal and community engagement coordinator. He assists schools, non-profits and community program leaders to identify current practices, activities, programs and policies that promote Asset Building. André is a past president of the Alaska Association of Secondary School Principals (AASSP), the Alaska Council of School Administrators (ACSA), was selected as Fairbanks' Secondary Principal of the Year in 1996, and received the AASSP Distinguished Service Award in 2002.

Ryan Aguilar |
Communications Specialist |
Ryan Aguilar serves as writer/editor for the Alaska ICE team. Along with researching, writing and editing original material to support the efforts of Alaska ICE, he also collects, sorts and reviews inspiring stories and informational materials from Alaskans around the state, for inclusion and publication on the Alaska ICE website and within other outreach materials.
