GEORGE TROXEL SELECTED AS
NEW MAT-SU SUPERINTENDENT
Matanuska-Susitna Borough School Board members have
unanimously approved the hiring of George Troxel as the new superintendent for
the district, effective July 1, 2007.
Troxel, a 16-year veteran of the district, is currently the assistant
superintendent of education and instruction.
A former principal at the elementary, middle and high school
level, Troxel served as interim superintendent for Mat-Su from December 1999 to
May of 2000, when Bob Doyle was hired.
Doyle is retiring.
ÒWe felt George was the right person, at the right time,Ó
said School Board President Larry DeVilbiss. ÒHe has proven his leadership
skills throughout his 16 years at the district and we have complete confidence
in him to take us through these next years with success.Ó

NSBA URGES HIGH COURT TO
CLARIFY STUDENT FREE SPEECH
In an amicus brief, the National School Boards Association
urged the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn a lower court decision and uphold a
local school boardÕs role to regulate student speech that might undermine the
core educational mission of schools or interfere with maintaining a safe,
secure and effective learning environment. The case, Morse v. Frederick,
involves a group of students who unfurled a banner that read ÒBong Hits for
JesusÓ at an event where students from Juneau-Douglas High School were
gathered. See full news release here:

U.S. CONSUMER PRICES JUMP
2.5 PERCENT IN 2006
After two years of being battered by soaring energy costs,
Americans got a bit of a reprieve in 2006, which helped restrain overall
inflation to the lowest increase in three years. See full story here:

LEARNING THE LAYOUT AT NEW
ANCHORAGE SCHOOL DISTRICT HQ
The Anchorage School District has a new home at an East
Anchorage mall that failed as a retail center, and with the transition, that
big building gets a new name. Once called the Boniface Center and now called
the Anchorage School District Education Center, the complex houses nearly 430
district administrators and employees, including the superintendentÕs office.

KIM FLOYD WAS HIGH-ENERGY
VOICE OF SCHOOLS
Kim Floyd spent 10 years at the Matanuska-Susitna Borough
School District, much of that as the face – and voice – of the
district as public information officer through a contentious period of layoffs,
budget cuts and privatization. As she prepares to leave Alaska, she reflects on
her time in the hot seat. See full

SAVE A CHEER FOR SCHOOL
CHEERLEADERS (COMMENTARY)
The bleachers in the Karl Ward Gymnasium werenÕt full for the
first home basketball game of the season. There was also a home swim meet, and
the debate team was away, as was the boysÕ basketball team. When you have only
105 students, you notice when 19 are missing. You also notice when 19 are
cheerleading. See full commentary by Haines School Board Member Heather Lende
