RANDOMLY DRUG TESTING
EMPLOYEES MAY BE ILLEGAL
Should teachers
undergo random drug tests? The arrest of a middle school vice principle last
week in Anchorage is raising that question, although itÕs not exactly a new
issue. Random testing was actually tackled by the Anchorage police and fire
departments several years ago. Public employees took the state to court over
random testing – and won. See full story here:

Anchorage schools Superintendent Carol
Comeau is proposing to increase the number of teachers, adding 77 teacher and
other jobs next school year, with the extra cash she is anticipating from the
state. The school board must approve the superintendentÕs request before it
goes to the city Assembly for final sign-off. See full story here:

GYM CLASSES GAIN
PRIORITY IN BUDGET PLAN
The Anchorage School District for
several years has dialed up its commitment to getting kids healthier. Eighteen
months ago, it removed junk food from vending machines and changed cafeteria
menus to make them more nutritious. Now Superintendent Carol Comeau wants elementary
school kids to get an extra half-hour of gym instruction a week. See full story
