MANY TEACHERS SEE FAILURE IN STUDENTSÕ FUTURE

Ask a teacher whether her students are on track to earn a college degree, and sheÕll probably say ÒSure.Ó Grant her anonymity and you my get a different point of view. In a wide-ranging survey released Tuesday, nearly one in four teachers in urban schools paint a sobering picture of students there. They say most children Òwould not be successful at a community college or university.Ó See full story here:

EXPERTS: TESTING COMPANIES BUCKLING UNDER WEIGHT OF NCLB

To motivate juniors on last AprilÕs assessment exams, Springfield High School offered coveted lockers, parking spaces near the door and free prom tickets as incentives for good scores. But the incentives at the central Illinois school went unclaimed until earlier this month, when Illinois finally published its 2006 test scores – more than four months after they were due. JUNEAU LOOKS TO RESHAPE EDUCATION

Parents, educators and students, trying to draw and comprehensive picture of Juneau with two major high schools, face a lot more work at the drawing board. A 35-person steering committee is considering public comments on five education proposals, with a goal of bringing a single plan for reform of high school education to the Juneau School Board in May. SCHOOLS PRO-ACTIVE IN ADDRESSING GANG ACTIVITY

Public school pupils increasingly engaging in gang talk and gang dress have policy makers thinking of ways to clamp down on gang activity before it turns ugly. Fairbanks Police Chief Dan Hoffman assigned four officers to monitor gang behavior in the community and in the schools. The school boardÕs policy review committee is working on an anti-gang policy, and community meetings are underway. See full story here:

KODIAK BEGINS IN-HOUSE SEARCH FOR INTERIM SUPERINTENDENT

The Kodiak Island Borough School District will conduct an in-house search for a superintendent to fill the job for one year while the district prepares a broader search for a new top administrator who would arrive in July 2008. The current superintendent, Betty Walters, is leaving after 10 years in the post. See full story here:

ONLINE WORLD ISNÕT ALWAYS SAFE FOR KIDS (COMMENTARY)

A computer expert lives in my house. She is only 11 years old. Admittedly, I am thrilled that she can help me figure things out when I am stumped by the laptop that seems to sometimes rule my life. Other times, I am terrified. So when Andre Layral with the Association of Alaska School Boards came to the Denali Borough School District to talk about kids and parents and the Internet, I was an eager attendee.
