EDUCATION FUNDING TASK FORCE
FORMS
Ten of 11 members of a special legislative task force on K-12
education funding have been named. House Speaker John Harris and Senate
President Lyda Green announced the appointments this week to the Joint
Legislative Education Funding Task Force. The Senate appointments include:
Sens. Lyman Hoffman, D-Bethel; Bert Stedman, R-Sitka; Johnny
Ellis, D-Anchorage; Gary Stevens, R-Kodiak; and Gary Wilken, R-Fairbanks.
They are joined by House members Reggie Joule, D-Kotzebue;
Paul Seaton, R-Homer; Bob Roses, R-Anchorage; Mike Hawker, R-Anchorage; and
Mike Kelly, R-Fairbanks.
A final member of the task force will be announced by Gov.
Sarah Palin.
The task force was formed in the waning hours of the 2007
legislative session when leaders were unable to agree on a series of changes to
the foundation funding program for schools. The task force is to meet this
summer and issue a set of recommendations by September 1.

SCHOOL SIZE
MATTERS AS LITTLE TOWNS LEARN LARGE
One of the advantages of smaller
schools is that class sizes often are smaller, allowing teachers more time with
individual students. As a result, test scores can often be higher than in
larger schools. That in turn can lead to funding cuts when districts try to
address needs throughout the system. The Anchorage Daily News profiled the
issue in Talkeetna. See full story here:

AIR FORCE TURNS
OVER BUILDINGS IN GALENA
Galena will take possession of two
military buildings this week as part of the federal governmentŐs decision to
remove the Air ForceŐs presence from the Yukon River village. ItŐs a move that
the community and Air Force have been working toward since 2005. The buildings
will be used by the Galena Interior Learning Academy, a statewide boarding
school on the Air Force base. See full story here:
