TASK FORCE: MORE FUNDING NEEDED FOR EDUCATION

A special task force set up to review education funding finalized its recommendations to the governor and Legislature last week, calling for additional funding for high-cost school districts as well as an across-the-board increase for all districts. See full story here:

A HEAPING HELPING OF HEALTH: MAKING BETTER FOOD CHOICES

Students in Kenai Peninsula Borough schools may find a little something extra in their school lunches this year. ÒAs we do our ground beef for tacos, we may add some sweet potatoes to the ground beef. It really lowers the fat count,Ó said Dean Hamburg, the Student Nutrition Services administrator for the district. See full story here (may require registration):

U.S. GIRLS SUICIDE RATES JUMP; OVERALL YOUTH RATE UP

The suicide rate among preteen and teenage girls rose to its highest level in 15 years, and hanging surpassed guns as the preferred method, federal health officials report. See full story here:

ÔBONG HITSÕ CASE GOES BACK TO COURT

Despite a U.S. Supreme Court ruling earlier this year on Joseph FrederickÕs free-speech case, the legal debate is not over. The case of the former Juneau-Douglas High School student was returned to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, which is an automatic part of the legal process. The court will either dismiss the case outright or send it to the U.S. District Court in Alaska for Frederick to argue for his banner, ÒBong Hits 4 Jesus,Ó under state free speech laws and civil liability issues. AASB REMINDS SCHOOL BOARDS OF SEPT. 28TH DEADLINE ON RESOLUTIONS

The Association of Alaska School Boards is reminding districts of the approaching deadline to submit resolutions for consideration at the AASB Annual Conference. The deadline for AASB to receive resolutions or amendments to existing resolutions is September 28th.  Per AASB bylaws, resolutions or amendments from districts must be approved by a formal vote of the school board.  So now is the time to schedule that discussion and vote.

Packets containing the proposed resolutions for 2008 were distributed to all school districts on August 6th. The deadline for AASB to receive district comments on the resolutions was established as September 28th. All resolutions proposed by then will be distributed to each district 30 days prior to the Annual Conference, Nov. 8-11, at the Anchorage Hilton Hotel.

If your superintendent or board has questions about the process, please contact John Greely at AASB, 586-1083, or jgreely@aasb.org
