READING TESTS FOR TEACHERS
The Fairbanks North Star Borough School Board doesnÕt want
the state to force teachers to prove they know how to teach students how to
read. The board approved a resolution opposing a new proposed regulation
requiring teachers to take a special reading course or pass a reading instruction
test before obtaining or renewing a professional certificate. See full story

RELIGION AND RUNNING CAN
WORK IN HARMONY
When the Anchorage School Board voted unanimously to
reschedule the Cook Inlet Conference cross-country running championships to
resolve a conflict with the Jewish holiday Yom Kippur, it had Brian Kirchner in
mind. The South High senior was the only runner to step forward and request the
date change. So far, Region IV is the only region to make he change. See full

RATING SCHOOLS (EDITORIAL)
The controversial No Child Left Behind Act is due to expire
this year, and as Congress works on renewing it, U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski wants
to fix one of the lawÕs more glaring problems. No Child Left Behind uses an
unfair and unhelpful way to judge how well schools educate children. See full

REMINDS SCHOOL BOARDS OF SEPT. 28TH DEADLINE ON RESOLUTIONS
The Association of Alaska School Boards
is reminding districts of the approaching deadline to submit resolutions for
consideration at the AASB Annual Conference. The deadline for AASB to receive
resolutions or amendments to existing resolutions is September 28th. Per AASB bylaws, resolutions or
amendments from districts must be approved by a formal vote of the school
board. So now is the time to
schedule that discussion and vote.
Packets containing the proposed
resolutions for 2008 were distributed to all school districts on August 6th.
The deadline for AASB to receive district comments on the resolutions was
established as September 28th. All resolutions proposed by then will
be distributed to each district 30 days prior to the Annual Conference, Nov.
8-11, at the Anchorage Hilton Hotel.
