STATE STAKE IN SCHOOLS PUT
ON TRIAL
Northwest AlaskaÕs Bering Strait School District is the size
of Minnesota, with most children living in poverty in traditional Native
villages, many speaking Siberian Yupik as their fist language. ItÕs
Superintendent John DavisÕ job to see that these kids are ready for adult life.
Davis was the first witness in a trail that opened Monday with a collection of
plaintiffs – Davis included – charging the state with failing to
give school districts e3nough money to pay for the quality education promised
by the state constitution. See full story here:

FAIRBANKS SCHOOL BONDS
APPROVED
Voters on Tuesday approved a pair of school bond measures
allowing the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District to raise $23.1
million in bonds for maintenance and renovation projects at 10 schools. All of
the projects are eligible for 70 percent reimbursement from the state. See full

PRESIDENT TO
HOST CONFERENCE ON SCHOOL VIOLENCE
The Bush administration will host a
conference next week to discuss the recent string of school violence across the
country. Officials say the conference will bring together education and law
enforcement officials to talk about the nature of the problem and federal
action that can help communities prevent violence and deal with its aftermath.
No date or place for the conference has been announced. See full story here:

EXPERTS: NO SURE WAY TO STOP
SCHOOL KILLINGS
Since the 1999 Columbine massacre that left 15 people dead,
there has been a determined effort among administrators, principals and
teachers to improve school safety. Law enforcement officers across the nation
and around the world have added training specifically intended to address
school violence. But experts say there is simply no way to guarantee that a
stranger or student wonÕt be able to injure or kill on school grounds. See full

SCHOOL VIOLENCE COMES TO ALASKA WITH ATTACK IN TELLER
A string of school attacks has occurred across the country,
and an attack in the village of Teller reminds Alaskans that the state is not
immune to school violence. State Troopers said an intoxicated 19-year-old
entered the school in Teller and attacked a contract worker, inflicting minor
injuries. See full story here:

GUNSHOTS PROMPT
LOCKDOWN AT MAT-SU SCHOOL
Meadow Lakes
Elementary experienced a brief lockdown Wednesday morning after school
officials heard live shotgun blasts outside the school. The lockdown ended
without incident after about 90 minutes. Authorities later said the shots
likely came from nearby hunters. See full story here:

SUPERINTENDENT
CRITICIZES CANDIDATEÕS GUN USE IN ADS
The heightened sensitivity to school
violence, due to multiple school shootings, may be working against a candidate
for House District 27 in West Anchorage. In a televised political
advertisement, Democrat Bob Buch uses a shotgun to bring up the issue of school
overcrowding. Superintendent Carol Comeau says she is appalled by the image.
