Delta Junction Elementary wins national award

 Delta Junction Elementary has been honored as a Blue Ribbon School by the federal government. The designation, an award given to only 287 schools across the nation this year, honors the top schools in America as far as student test scores are concerned or those whose students made leaps in performance on standardized tests.  See full story here:

Governor Palin Names Four to Board

 Governor Sarah Palin recently announced her appointments to the GovernorÕs Advisory Board on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse. The board advises the governor, legislature and state agencies on alcohol- or drug abuse -related mental health issues, on the design of prevention and treatment programs, and on public education efforts. One appointee, Michael E. Kerosky, has for 11 years been supervisor of the Anchorage School DistrictÕs Safe and Drug-Free Schools program, a partner of AASBÕs ICE initiative. Fewer Students Return to Anchorage Schools

 More than 600 students from the Anchorage School District did not reenroll for classes this year. That number represents a little more than 1 percent of the school district's total student population. "We were predicting an enrollment decline when we did our projections, but nothing at the level that we did," said Superintendent Carol Comeau. This pattern, seen by superintendents across the state to varying degrees, brings both positives and negatives to the Anchorage School District.  Read the full story here:

Study: Parents play big role in academic success

 A study from an education advocacy group suggests that whether low-income, urban students attend a public or private high school matters less to their academic success than whether their parents take part in their education, earn enough money to offer enriching experiences, and have high aspirations for their kids.

Literacy coach program gives students a boost

 More than a dozen reading specialists are at work in elementary schools across the Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District boosting the reading skills of struggling students, thanks to the new budgeting system and support from the borough Assembly.  Read full story here:

AASB NOMINATIONS REMINDER

The AASB Board of Directors would like to remind every school board member and superintendent that the deadline for nominations is fast approaching.  Nominations forms were mailed to board presidents and superintendents in early August.

 

Due dates for nominations are:

-Outstanding School Board and Outstanding School Board Member – October 22

-AASB Director positions (7 vacancies) – October 26

 

All nominations are required to be made by official board action, so please make sure that these items are placed on your October board agenda.

Nominations forms can be accessed easily by going to the front page of the AASB website at www.aasb.org .
