SENATE APPROVES $46.7 MILLION FOR DENALI COMMISSION IN ED BUDGET

 The U.S. Senate approved nearly $47 million for the Denali Commission as part of the Fiscal Year 2008 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Act. The measure (H.R. 3043), which passed the Senate 75-19, also includes a series of other provisions aimed at enhancing education in Alaska. See full news release here:

ANCHORAGE TEACHER WINS MILKEN AWARD

 Michael Warren, an eighth-grade language arts teacher at Central Middle School of Science, was awarded the national Milken Educator award during a surprise ceremony Wednesday. Warren will receive $25,000 from the Milken Family Foundation. See full news release here:

ALASKA EDUCATOR DEVOTED HIS LIFE TO BUSH SCHOOLS

 Lifelong Alaskan and Homer resident Frank William Hill died Oct. 9. Hill was born in Illiamna and taught for years in rural Alaska. See full obituary here:

YOUTH WANT MORE TO DO IN VILLAGES

 Among the resolutions agreed upon Tuesday by regional caucuses at the Elders and Youth Conference in Fairbanks was a call for more community centers that offer healthy, culturally relevant activities to young Alaska Natives. The resolution, initially proposed by a nine-grade word history class from St. MaryÕs School District, noted Native youth in rural Alaska would benefit from greater opportunities to participate in organized activities close to home.
