AASB ANNUAL CONFERENCE NOV. 9-12 AT HOTEL CAPTAIN COOK

School board members from around the state are gathering for the 53rd Annual Conference of the Association of Alaska School Boards next week.  The conference kicks off on Thursday, Nov. 9, and features exciting keynote speakers Robert Wendover, an expert on leadership and emerging generations, and Alice Ray, who specializes in technology and social and emotional learning. Numerous training opportunities for school board members and a new workshop in which a dozen Alaska school districts and community groups will share success stories will also be available before the conference ends on Sunday, Nov. 12. CANDIDATES FOR GOVERNOR OFFER DETAILED EDUCATION PLANS

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner asked the three major candidates for governor to summarize the approach they would take toward K-12 schools if elected on Nov. 7.  The newspaper found many areas where the candidates agree and a few differences on issues such as early childhood education.  See full story here:

UA ASKING FOR BUDGET OF MORE THAN $1 BILLION

University of Alaska President Mark Hamilton is asking the board of regents to approve an operating and capital budget totaling $1.27 billion. The budget currently does not include an estimated $32 million to fund an increase in pension costs, money the school is asking be provided separately.  See full story here:

SOCIAL NETWORKING: WHAT SCHOOL LEADERS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ON-LINE TEEN HANGOUTS

Should school district leaders be concerned when teens create their own web pages on social networking sites, such as MySpace and Facebook? Are there real dangers in posting inappropriate comments? How should school board policies adequately address these new issues? Join Kimberly Jessie, an associate at Bracewell Giuliani law firm, who will lead a lively online discussion about these issues on Wednesday, Nov. 8, from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. (Alaska Standard Time).  The discussion is hosted by the National School Boards Association.
