GOVERNOR PITCHES PLAN FOR
USING OIL TAX SURPLUS
Gov. Sarah Palin announced a savings and spending plan
proposal for the multi-billion dollar windfall Alaska state government is
enjoying. The state revenue department forecasts the surplus at $4.6 billion
through July of 2009. The governor wants more than half the surplus -- $2.6
billion – to go into a fund used to pay for schools. See full story here:

STATE FILES SUIT
AGAINST MERCER FOR PERS-TRS DAMAGES
The State of Alaska announced today the
filing of a lawsuit against Mercer Inc. seeking $1.8 billion in damages against
the former actuary for AlaskaÕs Public EmployeesÕ Retirement System (PERS) and

ANCHORAGE SCHOOLS NOW HALF
MINORITY, HALF WHITE
The Anchorage School District released its annual ethnicity
report showing that for the first time in the cityÕs recent history half of its
students are minorities. ÒIt really reflects the world,Ó said Superintendent

BILINGUAL
TUTORS HELP STUDENTS ADJUST
More than 4,000 students in the
Anchorage School District speak a language other than English at home. At
William Tyson Elementary School, six tutors are employed with skills in

WINTER
BOARDSMANSHIP ACADEMY AND SECRETARY WORKSHOP
AASBÕs Winter Boardsmanship Academy and
Secretary Workshop kick off Dec. 13-14 at the Hotel Captain Cook in Anchorage.
The academy is offering training in how to hire and retain teachers; how to
better train staff in technology; how to evaluate, train and offer tenure to
teachers; and how to evaluate superintendents. For secretaries, the sessions on
Dec. 13-14 will feature how-to sessions on organizing school board meetings,

UP: ALASKA STUDENT SAFETY SUMMIT, DEC. 10-11
The first-ever statewide summit designed
to bring together law enforcement officials, educators, community-based
providers, and youth leaders to discuss safety issues is scheduled for Dec.
10-11 in Anchorage. Subjects to be covered include gangs, suicide, vehicular
collisions, Internet predators, bullying, hate crimes and substance abuse. The
Alaska Student Safety Summit will be held at the Hotel Captain Cook. The
conference organizers are offering scholarships for high school students to
