STUDENTS WITNESS HISTORIC
CEREMONY
Almost 1,600 schoolchildren from the Fairbanks North Star
Borough witnessed Sarah PalinÕs historic inauguration Monday at the Carlson
Center. For many students, attending the inauguration was the climax of a fully
involved election experience. See full story here:

SCHOOL BOARD WILL FIGHT FOR
ADDITIONAL FUNDING
Anchorage School Board members plan to spend the legislative
session persuading state lawmakers that the district needs serious financial
help, including an increase in per-pupil funding, reimbursement for
voter-approved school construction and contributions for retirement funds. See

SCHOOL TO STATE: WE NEED
MORE MONEY
The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District is facing a
budget crunch and isnÕt getting enough state funding for students with
intensive needs, school district administrators told local lawmakers Wednesday
at an annual briefing. See full story here:

COURT MAY
UNTANGLE STUDENT-SPEECH CASES IN ŌBONG HITSÕ
Public school administrators have
complained for years that the Supreme CourtÕs trilogy of student free-speech
cases – Tinker,
Fraser and Hazelwood – have given them conflicting
guidance about what to do when they are suddenly faced with a First Amendment
controversy. On Dec. 1, the Supreme Court responded by agreeing to review an
unusual student expression case from Juneau. But whether the case of Morse
v. Frederick will end
the confusion or add to it is far from clear. See full analysis here:

See Juneau
School District statement on the case here:

SAME-SEX
BENEFITS NO ISSUE, LITTLE COST
Never mind the legal chaos at the state
level, confused further by the swearing in of a new governor Monday. The
municipality of Anchorage, the Anchorage School District and the Alaska
Railroad all are moving ahead with plans to provide benefits for same-sex
partners of employees. See full story here:

LEADERS DISCUSS
HOW TO STRENGTHEN EDUCATION
Education in Alaska, including job
readiness and the impact of the No Child Left Behind Act on public schools, was
the topic of conversation during the second annual Lee Gorsuch Public Policy
Forum on Nov. 28. A panel of six people provided a variety of perspectives on
changing expectations for public education. See full story here:

NEW CHARTER
SCHOOL TO FOCUS ON NATIVE TRADITIONS
A new charter school is in the works for
Anchorage and it will focus on Alaska Native tradition. Organizers say the
school, scheduled to open next fall in Mountain View, will have a Yupik
immersion program, with other languages available as the need arises. See full
story here:

HUNT FOR
SUPERINTENDENT PICKS UP MOMENTUM
So far 16 people from 13 states and two
countries have shown an interest in the superintendentÕs position in Fairbanks
and have requested application packets from the school board. See full story
here:

ANCHOR POINT
DIMS AS TWO POINTS OF LIGHT DIE
Grade school teachers became grief
counselors Monday as the 121 students at Anchor PointÕs Chapman Elementary
learned that their school social worker and her precocious first-grade daughter
were killed in a Seward Highway crash. See full story here:
