CASE RESTS WITH JUDGE ON
SCHOOLS
ItÕs now up to a judge to decide if Alaska schools get enough
state money to give kids the education promised by the state constitution.
After weeks of testimony in a fight over the role of money in student success,
both sides in Moore v. State tried to sell their position Tuesday to Superior
Court Judge Sharon Gleason. See full story here:

ANCHORAGE TEACHERS AUTHORIZE
A STRIKE
As expected, teachers and other members of the Anchorage
Education Association voted Tuesday to authorize a strike, according to union
officials who declined to say what the vote was. No strike date was set, and
the union has openly acknowledged the vote was meant to pressure the School
District into sweetening its last offer as both sides start presenting their
cases to an arbitrator. See full story here:

HAINES SCHOOL CONTRACT TALKS

Haines Education Association members likely will be seeking
increased pay and help with rising health insurance premiums when official
contract negotiations begin next month. See full story here:

REPORT: SCHOOL
AID NOT DISTRIBUTED EVENLY
Poor students are shortchanged by
federal and state school aid policies, a report released Wednesday says. At the
federal level, the Education Department gives states nearly $13 billion a year
to help students in low-income districts. The complex formula used to determine
each stateÕs share guarantees a minimum amount for small states. And the incoming
chairman of the Senate committee with jurisdiction over the program says it may
be time to reevaluate it. See full story here:
