Alaska Gateway
District Overview
The Alaska Gateway School District, located in the rural eastern interior of Alaska and covering some 20,700 square miles, serves 489 students in seven communities. The communities include Dot Lake, Eagle, Mentasta, Northway, Tanacross, Tetlin, and Tok. All schools have been identified as Title I sites with 90-100% of the students qualifying for federal free and reduced lunch. The District has invested heavily in early interventions to increase reading achievement. A program, Direct Instruction that emphasizes the use of small-group, face-to-face instruction by teachers and aides, has been adopted and implemented to systematically address the needs of young readers.
