District Mission

The mission of Cordova School District, a premier education community integrated with and enhanced by the unique realities of our surroundings, is to ensure Cordova’s youth experience success and are responsible citizens, through a system characterized by: a safe learning environment; highest quality staff; a full array of academic, elective and extra-curricular offerings, challenging curricula for each student; continued pursuit of excellence; and an active involvement of parents and community.

Strategies and Specific Results

Strategy #1: We will provide rich, continuous curricula and programs that meet individual needs and maintain our standard of excellence. 

Specific Results:

1.  Develop a K12 Art/Drama Program for our school district.

2.  Establish a social skills program for students demonstrating a need for social

skills.

3.  Establish a K8 gifted program.

4.  Implement an intensive English Language Learner program.

5.  Implement a Response to Intervention special education model (RTI).

6.  Develop a Foreign Language program for all grade levels.

Strategy #2:  We will provide each student with the safest possible learning environment.

Specific Results:

1.  Secure window blind cords out of student’s way when blinds are up.

2.  Removal of wooden stairs leading up to covered playground at elementary school.

3.  Securely mount all framed pictures to wall.

4.  Provide increased visibility in hall juncture and locker room stairwell.

5.  Eliminate the need to transport television equipment through crowded hallways and reduce risk of TV’s safety straps failing.

6.  Establish an emergency plan for safe evacuation of high school gym during school community events.

Strategy #3: We will offer each student a system of support that promotes indivdual success.

Specific Results:

1.  Students will receive reading instruction using “best practice” methods

designed to meet the needs of all students.

2.  Continue to provide opportunities with local businesses, community

members, and industry to mentor students in their special abilities.

3.  Establish a mentoring program utilizing community members, students and

staff to aid ELL and LEP students in achieving academic and social success.

4.  To assist teachers in understanding the educational challenges and needs of

ED students and to provide strategies and techniques for managing individual behaviors in theclassroom.

Strategy #4:  We will have the most effective staff to accomplish our mission and objectives.

Specific Results:

1.   Expand the staff development program to increase the effectiveness of the staff to help students achieve.

2.   Establish chain of command and leadership to have a more effective staff.

3.   Provide effective communication for all staff.

Strategy #5:  We will ensure the community is integral to our success.

 Specific Results: 

1.   Create a database to be utilized by all community oriented

programs that includes community resources, volunteer

opportunities, and potential volunteers.

2.   Establish community and business partnerships to provide the

schools with additional expertise and resources.

3.   Utilize grant opportunities that provide a financial foundation

for community and school partnerships.

4.   Replace the existing SWEP program with a career exploration

program for juniors and seniors, for credit only, that includes

a wide variety of opportunities.

5.   Implement a requirement of 40 hours of community

involvement for high school graduation.

6.   Implement a schedule of professional development inservice

that trains district staff to utilize community resources in their

curriculum.

7.   Publicly recognize all volunteers on an annual basis in

appreciation for their service.

8.   Build awareness in the school and in the community of

involvement opportunities and their benefits through a variety

of media.

Strategy #6:  We will ensure a culture of goal setting and achieving.

We will actively integrate Leadership, Teamwork and Citizenship

throughout the educational process.

Specific Results:

1.       Use the staff team concept to promote teamwork skills within K12.

2.       Establish a student council for grades 7-8*; separate from grades 912.

3.       Establish a peer mediation program with partnership between district and community agencies for the Elementary School.

4.       Initiate an annual student directed service project at the Junior High School Level.

5.       Develop a variety of informal student clubs at both schools based on student interest.
