Quality Students/Quality Schools – QS2

QS2 – Quality Schools/Quality Students – was envisioned by AASB as a school reform service supported and facilitated by AASB but strictly controlled by the local school district.  The 3-year partnership is centered on the belief that school districts, together with their local constituents, have the capacity to challenge old ways of operating and create improve strategies and programs for the benefit of all children.  QS2 operates on a framework addressing 4 areas – leadership, program and staff, community, parents and students, and resources.  QS2 was launched by AASB in 2000 with a total of nine school districts served in any given year.  Seventeen districts have participated to date.

QS2 District Student Academic Performance:  The table to the right summarizes the proficiency level of QS2 district 10th-grade students as measured by the High School Graduation Qualifying Exam (HSGQE) during 2004-2006.     

Student proficiency, as demonstrated by HSGQE performance, remains somewhat fluid among QS2 districts with modest gains and losses occurring year to year.   However, consistent incremental gains are being made in several districts including Delta/Greely, Dillingham, Pribilof, Sitka, Unalaska, and Yukon Flats.  The subject area of greatest strength in most districts is writing, with the area of math posing the greatest challenge.  Reading proficiency is an area of concern in our districts with first language usage.
