St. Mary’s
District Overview
St. Mary’s Schools serve 170 students in two adjacent facilities in the heart of St. Mary’s.  The community of St. Mary’s is located on the bank of the Andreafsky River, 450 air miles west-northwest of Anchorage.  St. Mary’s was established as a supply depot and winter headquarters for the Northern Commercial Company’s riverboat fleet in 1899.  Jesuit missionaries established a mission nearby to educate and care for children orphaned by a 1900 flu epidemic.  The mission remained active until in closed in 1987.  St. Mary’s remains primarily a Yup’ik Eskimo community that depends heavily on fishing and subsistence lifestyle.
