Community Profile

Hydaburg is located on the southwest coast of Prince of Wales Island, 45 air miles northwest of Ketchikan. Hydaburg is located in a beautiful setting on the coast and is the largest Haida village in Alaska. Residents maintain a subsistence and commercial fishing lifestyle.

Hydaburg has a fishing-based economy with many residents holding commercial fishing permits. The first fish processing plant opened in 1927, and three other canneries operated through the 1930s. The Haida Corp. maintains a substantial timber holding, although logging was suspended in 1985 due to a decline in the timber market.

The State owns and operates a seaplane base in Hydaburg with a FAA-designated approach. Scheduled flights from Hydaburg connect in Ketchikan. An emergency heliport is also available. The City owns a dock and small boat harbor. A road leads to Craig, Klawock and Hollis, where the Inter-Island ferry arrives and departs daily. Barges from Seattle deliver goods to Prince of Wales Island.

Prince of Wales Island is dominated by a cool, moist, maritime climate. Average summer temperatures range from 49 to 63; winter temperatures average from 32 to 42. Average annual precipitation is 120 inches, including 40 inches of snow

The School District Profile

The Hydaburg School District is situated in the heart of the Alaska wilderness with well tended homes and gardens. Bountiful resources are readily available from both land and sea. Given the location, hunting and fishing contribute greatly to the diet of Hydaburg residents. An active salmon stream is located in the heart of Hydaburg.
The teaching staff is comprised of many seasoned educators with a few newcomers arriving each year. Students are enthusiastic and generally continue their post-secondary schooling following graduation from high school. The Board is hopeful that the district will receive a boost in enrollment given the current student population attending the Head-Start preschool program. The school staff and Board are particularly proud of the master scuba program being offered the only public school in Alaska to have such a diving program.
The road system on Prince of Wales is extensive, allowing teachers and students to utilize the rich outdoor laboratory so readily accessible.

The superintendent, supported by the business manager/administrative assistant, serves as the districts only administrator.
